Hello:
Today, I went into Best Buy and purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 instead of a Nexus. The primary reason behind this is because I couldn't play with the Nexus, as Google or someone had locked it, preventing TalkBack from working. According to a review, this tablet, The Galaxy Tab 3, runs out-of-date hardware, and has a Core 2 Duo processor and not quad core. It still has TalkBack though, so do you think this is an ideal tablet? Does it have to be a Nexus, or is that what blind people purchase for best results?
There is nothing wrong with the Samsung tab 3 but your updates will be sent to you a little later then a nexis device. Let me go look and see what android that tablit is running.
Okay the Samsung galaxy tab 3 is running 4.1 of jelly bean why, I have no clue but its still accessible. However, you can not turn talkback on and off by yourself if someone turns it off do to the OS limitations, no labeling buttons and some web views are very buggy. now with that said should you wqant to upgrade it via a custom rom seeings how this tablit recently came out it probly has a 4.3 or kitcat update via xda developers.
Okay,
So do you think I should keep the device, or return it for a Nexus?
How do I upgrade it?
to root a device you need a custom recover like clock work mod, custom rom and gaps or google gaps file. Now you need to boot into recovery with sighted help, use your volume key and install the custom recovery so you can proceed on installing the rom and google apps files
now lets say you have the custom recovery installed, reboot back into recovery mode, have your friend whipe delvic cash, system cash and default cash. now, do not reboot at all go to install zip from sd card, find your rom and press power to install the app. NOw go back to the recovery minu and do not reboot, go back to install zip from SD, and install the gapps files. That is your done, have your sighted friend get you past the set-up screen if you used a cm rom if not then just place two fingers on the screen and wait for talkback to come up talking, do not move your hand at all. now with all this said, I have a nexis7 and I would not traid it at all., I just got kitcat and love it.
Hi, I returned the Samsung tab and purchased for $30 more a 32 Gigabyte Nexus. So, if I want to upgrade it to Kitcat, what should I do? This is running 4.3.
Nathan.
go to settings, scroll up with the two finger gester and double tap about tablit. Then tap system update and then tap update. Your tablit will let you know if there is an update.
Thanks. Where is a more in debth tutorial regarding TalkBack? I am able to flick up and down, and scroll through the various "Home Screens." It seems, however, that each Home Screen contains the same items. Help would be appreciated. The accessibility gesture worked flawlessly.
okay after doing some research here is a guide that can help you with android link: http://eyes-free.blogspot.com/
talkback has a tutorial built into theOS so here is how to get to it: simple way, tap apps, tap settings, scroll up to accessibility, tap accessibility, tap talkback and then tap settings. Now scroll up to "explore by touch tutorial" tap it as well. quicker way swipe down and to the right, weight for talkback to start giving you directions for interacting with the circle on your screen and then move right and up to "talkback settings". When you find it lift up and the item will activate. In Here scroll down to "explore by touch" tutorial and tap it.
Thanks, will have to play around with everything after exams are over.

I've just purchased a Nexus 7 and am looking forward to experimenting with it. I decided a while back that an Android phone wasn't for me and am happy with my iPhone, but since I still enjoy playing around with Android, I figured a tablet was a good idea.
I spend some extensive time with my nexus 7 using Droy 4.4 KitKat OS. Its amazing. Androy Accessibility has come a long way from even JB to KitKat. Even though with Nexus 7 1st Gen, i can see much improvement. It seems overall smoother with KitKat compare to JB, and overall nicer feel to it.
Mine should be here today, and I'm looking forward to it! My last Android device only ran ICS, so I'm thinking this will be a completely different experience.
The Nexus hardware is really nice, though of course Samsung's hardware is top of the line also. I think the major advantage with a Nexus is you get stock firmware instead of manufacturer-modified firmware, and so when Android is updated you get the latest, no waiting on the manufacturer to get around to updating it for you.
your right leo, which is why I bought a nexis5 and told t-moble and my last phone manufacture LG to shove it and went with a nexis device. I do have a HTC1 but its my business/playd device I use for listening to music and some android consultant help I am trying to get off the ground. You will find more under the garage selling board where I posted my info to contact me. Also let me add here, HTC, LG and Samsung have a google play adition which just has the pure android with no skin modifications, so if you want these devices and not a nexis5 or 4 for a phone go check out the google play store. The motorolaG and motorolaX are sold on the store as well. Both phones are barely skin, supported by google and quickly updated because google owns Motorola.

Have the opportunity to help a friend setting up her new Kindle Fire HDX with Talkback and all the other goodies. Also, have the opportunity to play at her device for a few days before she picked them up today. I'm not really impress with the accessibility of the device. As much as Kindle Fire now can use with explore by touch and talkback does work well enough to be usable, it is still quite a long way before it can catch up with Nexus.
The Books app on the device itself is again, accessible enough to be usable, but again, it is rather limited as far as what you can do with it. You can't easily go backward or forward a page, can't read by word or character or paragraph to name a few.
I suppose, the Kindle book app on the fire hdx is a step forward for Amazon to think and consider about the accessibility of the Kindle App on Androy OS. It is good enough to be usable, but from what it is on the Kindle Fire HDX itself, it is not really useful enough for advance user.
go see my post on the android app board, the kindle app is now accessible on google's android platform.
